What Are Shark Teeth in Kids?

Seeing two rows of teeth in your child’s mouth can be alarming. Before you panic, know that what you’re seeing is a common phenomenon known as “shark teeth,” and it’s usually nothing to worry about. Named after the multiple rows of teeth seen in sharks, this dental milestone may look strange, but it’s a normal part of growing up for many children.

Here’s what you need to know about shark teeth in kids and how to handle them.

What Are “Shark Teeth”?

Shark teeth refer to a situation where a child’s permanent teeth begin to grow in behind their baby teeth before the baby teeth have fallen out. This creates the appearance of a second row of teeth, much like a shark’s smile.

It most commonly happens with the lower front teeth around the age of 5 to 7, but it can also occur with upper front teeth or even molars in older children. In most cases, this is simply a temporary phase as the baby teeth begin to loosen and fall out on their own.

    Why Do Shark Teeth Happen?

Typically, when adult teeth are ready to come in, they push directly underneath the baby teeth, causing them to loosen and fall out. But sometimes, if there isn’t enough room or the baby tooth roots haven’t dissolved as expected, the permanent tooth may erupt behind the baby tooth instead of directly under it.

While it may look concerning, shark teeth don’t usually indicate a problem with oral health or development. However, it’s a good idea to monitor the situation and speak with your child’s dentist if you’re unsure.

      What Should You Do?

If your child has a loose baby tooth and a permanent tooth coming in behind it, encourage gentle wiggling. With a little patience, the baby tooth will likely fall out on its own, and the permanent tooth will shift forward into its proper position over time.

        However, if:

        • The baby tooth isn’t loose at all,
        • The permanent tooth continues to come in at an odd angle,
        • Or your child is experiencing discomfort or difficulty eating,

…it’s time to consult a pediatric dentist. They may recommend a simple, quick baby tooth extraction to allow the adult tooth to come in properly and avoid crowding.

        Preventing Future Dental Issues

Although shark teeth are usually harmless, keeping regular dental checkups is essential. Your child’s dentist can track how their adult teeth are developing and address any potential orthodontic concerns early on. Plus, visits to a trusted pediatric provider ensure that your child gets gentle care tailored to growing smiles.

Shark teeth might look scary, but with a little guidance, they’re just another exciting part of growing up.
