As an adult, you know that you’re expected to see your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and teeth cleaning appointment. But what about your child? Do their teeth need the same type of care and attention? The reality is that young smiles are far more prone to cavity development, and catching problems early on is in the best interest of every child. Read on to find out how often your child should see their pediatric dentist so that their smile remains healthy and cavity-free throughout the year.
What is the General Rule About Pediatric Dental Visits?
To start, a child’s first visit to the dentist’s office should occur either before they turn one or as soon as their first baby tooth erupts.
Establishing good habits, a positive relationship with the dentist and staff, and helping your child become familiar with their surroundings can help to keep them on the right track when it comes to taking care of their smile or visiting the dentist’s office.
In general, though, experts recommend children see their pediatric dentist twice each year (every six months) for regular checkups and teeth cleanings.
What is Included in These Visits?
While at the dentist’s office, your child can expect to have digital X-rays taken of their teeth (if necessary) as well as undergo a thorough examination of their teeth, gums, bite, and oral and facial structures.
This allows the dental team to check for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, malocclusion, or other abnormalities. You can expect to answer several questions about your child’s overall health and whether there is a family history of oral issues. A thorough teeth cleaning will then be provided, removing plaque and tartar accumulations from teeth and around the gumline.
As part of the visit, you and your child will also receive various tips to help improve at-home oral hygiene habits as well as learn more about which foods are best for teeth and gums. They’ll also explain why certain habits need to cease (i.e., teeth grinding, thumb-sucking, etc.) before more serious issues develop (i.e., narrow palate or gapped teeth).
Having your child maintain regular pediatric dental appointments is the most effective way to keep their growing smiles on track as they enter each new stage of life.
