If you’re an expecting parent, congratulations! This is an exciting time – though it can also be stressful. You no doubt want what’s best for you and your soon-to-be child, but between the increased fatigue and constantly fluctuating hormones, it can be downright difficult to keep track of what you should and shouldn’t do.
Fortunately, you don’t have to know everything. That’s what your pediatric dental team is for! Here’s one thing they can tell you is certain: it’s still important to take care of your smile on a daily basis. Keep reading to learn why.
Your Oral Health and You
A lot changes during pregnancy, including the way your body responds to plaque and bacteria build up. Thanks to increased sensitivity and chronic inflammation, expecting mothers are more likely to develop gum disease than they would normally be. Frequent morning sickness and sugary cravings can also damage your natural enamel, making you more prone to cavities.
Your Oral Health and Your Baby
The oral bacteria responsible for conditions like gum disease can travel to other areas of your body, like, for instance, your uterus. This can lead to premature labor and increase the likelihood of your baby having low birth weight. While children who are born prematurely don’t always experience health issues, it does lead to greater risk of hearing problems, poor eyesight, and more chronic conditions like cerebral palsy.
Maintaining Your Smile While Expecting
The best way to mitigate oral bacteria accumulation and protect the health of you and your baby is to brush your teeth twice daily, floss at least once per day, and visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. For extra protection, it’s also a good idea to consider fluoride treatment and ask your dentist about a safe mouthwash product.
At the end of the day, every expecting parent has different dental care needs. Your dentist can help you identify what yours are so you can promote the health and wellness of your baby – and yourself. If you’re pregnant, go ahead and give them a call to schedule an appointment. And remember: two cleanings a day keeps the plaque away!
