Stops Decay Without Drilling
SDF arrests cavity progression without needing to remove any tooth structure — making it ideal for treating early-stage decay.

Even with great brushing habits, cavities can still happen — especially in growing smiles. At Sprout Dentistry for Kids in McKinney, we offer Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) as a safe, gentle way to stop cavities from getting worse without drilling or numbing. It’s quick, effective, and perfect for kids who need a low-stress treatment option.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a special liquid used to stop tooth decay in its tracks. Applied directly to areas of early decay, it works by killing harmful bacteria and hardening the tooth surface to prevent the cavity from progressing. This non-invasive treatment is FDA-approved, pain-free, and takes just a few minutes to apply. At our McKinney office, SDF is often recommended for young children, kids with special healthcare needs, or those who aren’t ready for restorative dental work. It’s a proven way to keep teeth healthy and avoid more invasive procedures down the line.

Application is painless and fast. There’s no need for numbing, which helps reduce dental anxiety and keeps visits stress-free.
Because it’s non-surgical and well-tolerated, SDF is a go-to option for little ones, children with special needs, or those new to dental visits.
Silver Diamine Fluoride is a simple solution that can make a big difference. At our McKinney location, Dr. Justin and Dr. Sage will help you decide whether SDF is the best choice based on your child’s needs, comfort, and stage of development.

Before we apply SDF, your child’s tooth is gently cleaned and dried. We’ll make sure all plaque and debris are removed so the solution can be fully effective.
Using a small brush, we apply the liquid directly to the decayed area. The SDF penetrates the enamel and begins working immediately to stop bacteria and strengthen the tooth.
After treatment, we’ll ask that your child avoid eating or drinking for an hour. We’ll also continue to monitor the tooth at future visits to ensure the decay remains arrested and determine if a permanent restoration is needed.

Yes — SDF causes the decayed portion of the tooth to turn dark brown or black, which is a sign the cavity has been successfully stopped. Healthy enamel will remain unchanged.
Yes. In some cases, multiple applications may be needed to keep the decay stable. We’ll keep a close eye on the tooth and let you know if additional treatment is necessary.
SDF can delay or even eliminate the need for a filling. However, in cases where the cavity is large or the tooth is structurally weakened, a crown or restoration may still be recommended.
