Reduces Anxiety and Fear
For children who feel nervous or overwhelmed, sedation can help them relax and feel more at ease during their visit.

You don’t need to be a pediatric dentist to know that most children don’t exactly love going to the dentist! While our fun and friendly dental office is enough to calm most nerves about dentistry, some children need a little extra help to feel relaxed during their appointments, particularly those with special needs. At Sprout Dentistry for Kids, our team can use safe and gentle sedation to take the stress out of your child’s dental care, making it easy from them to get the bright, beautiful, and healthy smile they deserve. To share your needs with us and learn more about your options, give us a call today.

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. It’s commonly used for kids who feel nervous at the dentist, need extensive dental work, or have a hard time sitting still. At Sprout, we offer several types of sedation — from mild nitrous oxide to deeper general anesthesia — depending on your child’s age, needs, and the procedure being performed. Our goal is to create a positive experience while keeping your child safe every step of the way.
For children who feel nervous or overwhelmed, sedation can help them relax and feel more at ease during their visit.
Sedation minimizes discomfort, especially during longer or more complex procedures — making it easier for kids to sit through their treatment.
Children with sensory sensitivities, behavioral differences, or special healthcare needs may benefit from sedation to ensure they receive the care they need in a stress-free way.

We’re happy to answer your questions, walk you through the different levels of sedation, and help you choose the best approach for your child’s needs.
We provide multiple levels of sedation to suit the needs of every patient and situation. We'll discuss all of your child's options in detail with you and recommend the best choice for your kiddo's comfort.
Does your child only feel a little anxious during their dental visits? If so, then nitrous oxide sedation may be exactly what they need. A small mask is placed over the nose, and a child simply breathes in the “laughing gas” to make any nerves seemingly melt away. The mask stays on for the entire appointment, and once it’s off, a child should feel completely normal and be able to go straight back to school.
For children who have moderate-to-severe dental phobia or require an involved procedure, their dentist can administer them an anti-anxiety medication prior to their treatment. That way, before treatment is started, they will already be more mentally and physically relaxed. They should remain awake the entire time and be able to respond to simple commands, but the appointment will go by very fast for them, and they will likely have a fuzzy memory of it afterward.
General anesthesiology, otherwise known as “sleep dentistry,” is recommended for children with extreme dental phobia, special needs, or those in need of multiple complex procedures in a single appointment. This enables a child to literally sleep through an entire appointment and wake up with no memory of it afterward. We will take a complete medical history of your child before recommending this treatment to ensure everything is safe and sound. While your child is under, we will monitor their breathing and heart rate the entire time. Our doctors are both credentialed with hospital privileges at Children’s Health Medical Center in the case your child’s needs are best suited for care in a hospital setting. Together, our doctors work with pediatric anesthesiologists to ensure that you child’s dental treatment is completed safely while your child is comfortably asleep. You can be assured knowing that your child has a team of expert doctors specializing in pediatric dental surgery and anesthesiology working in unison to deliver the highest safety and quality care for your child.

We begin with a thorough review of your child’s medical history, behavior, and treatment needs. This helps us determine the safest and most appropriate sedation method.
Depending on the level of sedation chosen, we may administer a sedative before or during the visit. Throughout the procedure, your child will be closely monitored by our trained team to ensure their safety and comfort.
After the appointment, we’ll provide guidance for recovery, including eating, activity, and any temporary side effects. Most children return to their normal routines the same or next day, depending on the type of sedation used.

Sedation may be recommended if your child has high dental anxiety, trouble sitting still, special healthcare needs, or is undergoing a lengthy or complex procedure. We’ll evaluate your child and discuss all your options during your consultation.
This depends on the type of sedation used. With nitrous oxide, your child will be fully awake and likely remember the visit. With oral sedation or general anesthesia, they may have little to no memory of the procedure.
