The Importance of Special Needs Dentistry

Children with special needs suffer from much higher rates of cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss compared to the general population, and this is because practicing regular oral hygiene and attending routine appointments can be extremely difficult. These children are also more likely to have severe dental phobia, which can make trips to the dentist a potentially traumatic experience.

At Sprout Dentistry for Kids, we do our best to create a warm and welcoming environment where absolutely everyone can feel comfortable, and our team has the training to help special needs children in a way that takes all the anxiety out of their dental care. Working hand-in-hand with parents, we’re able to provide children with everything they need to enjoy optimal oral health.

Can you help my child with special needs who needs restorative dental work?

In addition to providing regular checkups and cleanings, we’re also able to repair any dental damage or decay a child has developed. For more nervous patients, sedation dentistry can be used to guarantee a calmer and more relaxed experience. We can also work with parents to help them and their children develop a home oral hygiene routine so they can take better care of their teeth between visits.

What types of special needs are you trained to work with?

We’re able to serve most children, including those with the following special needs:Down SyndromeAutismMuscular DystrophyMultiple SclerosisEpilepsyADD/ADHDBi-Polar DisorderODDBlind/Limited visionDeaf/Limited hearingSensitivity to light, sounds, smells, etc.If your child’s need isn’t listed above, give us a call to speak with our team, we may still be able to provide care!

Yes. Depending on your child’s needs, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and in some cases, general anesthesia to ensure a calm and safe experience.

How do you prepare for a first visit with a special needs patient?

We start with a phone consultation or in-office meet-and-greet to get to know your child and plan accordingly. We can schedule a shorter “happy visit” first to build familiarity if needed.

What if my child can’t tolerate a full cleaning or exam?

That’s okay. We’ll work at your child’s pace. Our goal is to make each visit as positive as possible — even if we start small and build trust over time.
